From social media to this morning’s couch, the beauty world is buzzing about Queen Camilla’s newly defined eyebrows. And although the palace has not commented directly, Suzanne Martin, a high-end eyebrow artist known for her semi-permanent “couture brow” method, claimed credit for the flattering makeover by posting an image of the queen on her Instagram page and writing, “Our beloved Queen Camilla, always delighted! Thank you for trusting me.”
Although we don’t have much in common with the royal family, we can empathize with them. Just as your hair thins as you age, your eyebrows also thin due to hormonal changes. Now, I’m in my late 40s, in the middle of menopause, and I was starting to notice that my eyebrows were looking thinner and sparser.
Thanks to the ’90s thin eyebrow trend and the tweezing sessions that had Gwen Stefani as our muse, we’ve never had thicker eyebrows. And sadly, over the years, they stopped growing. Without my trusty eyebrow makeup, I looked like a hard-boiled egg and couldn’t leave the house without some careful artistry with my best eyebrow pencil. Semi-permanent solutions began to become more and more attractive.

Microblading makeover by our beauty director – with before and after photos
I had been considering microblading for a while, but I was a little scared that it would be painful and that I wouldn’t like the results and wouldn’t be able to get it removed, so I was put off by it. But one morning, feeling depressed after too many days of staring at my eyebrowless face in the bathroom mirror, I booked an appointment to see eyebrow guru Karen Betts, the UK’s leading expert on permanent make-up and microblading.
There are many things you should know before getting microblading, but I was curious to know what benefits this semi-permanent tattoo offers. First of all, Karen She explained to me that redefining the shape and tone of sparse eyebrows with a permanent treatment can restore symmetry and subtly lift facial features, creating a fresher, more youthful facial impression. “Slightly lifting the arch can widen the area around your eyes, and the right tone will help your brows look harmonious and natural,” explains Karen. “Our eyebrows are such a distinctive feature, and when done well, they really define the whole face,” she added. Now you’re ready to get started.

Karen explained the process to me and applied numbing cream to the area. First, she drew the shape with an eyebrow pencil and asked me what eyebrow shade she had chosen. Then I relaxed and let her get to work. She uses a small handheld tool with tiny needles that deposit pigment into the top layer of the skin. After the first shape was completed, I didn’t feel anything, but she applied more numbing cream and continued to draw small hair-like strokes to create the shape and color of my new eyebrows.
After that, the area looked a little red. When the numbing cream wore off, my eyebrows stung a little, but nothing serious. When I looked in the mirror the next morning, I was shocked to see that the dye had oxidized overnight and turned quite dark, but Karen assured me that this was temporary and would settle down after a few days. A layer of mascara and my favorite bright red, long-wearing lipstick balanced out my previously dramatic brows.
Is aftercare required?
,For the next four weeks, I applied a clear balm to my eyebrows twice a day to help them heal. At first, you can’t even wet your eyebrows, which makes washing your hair and face a little difficult. Karen gave me a plastic visor to stick on my forehead when I shower. This means you can wash your hair without splashing water on your face. It was very easy to use for the first week. I also used cotton and micellar water to cleanse my face until my eyebrows were wet again.
Six weeks later, I went to see Karen again for a top-up session. So she was able to rethink the shape and fill in the gaps. “Defined brows can frame your eyes, soften your face, and create a natural lift. No injections or surgery required,” she told me. And she’s right!

I can’t believe the transformation. I’m fortunate enough to be able to try many treatments as part of my job, but microblading my eyebrows is one of the best “tweaks” I’ve tried. It has made a huge difference in my facial structure and confidence.
Five months later, my brows still look great. The color is a little faded, but that’s completely normal. In fact, it looks so natural that I often forget it’s not my real eyebrows. It also requires almost no maintenance. Where before you had to spend a lot of time each day using an eyebrow pencil to define your brows, now you can just apply a little brow gel and touch up any hair growth.
I made an appointment to see Karen again in 12 months for a refill. That’s the only thing to consider when it comes to microblading. It is a semi-permanent treatment, so the effects will not last forever. If you want your eyebrows to always look fresh and defined, you should refresh them every 12 to 18 months. But in my opinion it was a very good use of money.
How to choose the appropriate treatment and doctor
Before choosing a practitioner, make sure that the practitioner has the appropriate qualifications and licenses to perform the procedure. Evaluate their portfolio on Instagram or website and make sure what they are showing is a fully healed result and that it matches your own desired results. Semi-permanent eyebrow treatments look great when you first get them done, but you want to make sure they’re still looking good after a few months, or even a year. By doing so, you can be sure that you understand the use of the correct color pigments and that your technique is good enough that the results will not smudge or blur after healing.
There are a variety of semi-permanent brow treatments to choose from, depending on your skin type and the type of effect you desire.
- Microblading: Using a semi-permanent tattoo technique with hand-held tools, pigment is deposited into the skin, creating small, hair-like strokes to achieve natural, full brows. It works best on dry skin that retains pigment for a long time, but oily skin can fade hairy strokes and lose definition over time.
- powder eyebrows Using a machine to add small dots of pigment to your skin creates a soft, filled-in effect, as if you were applying an eyebrow pencil. It has a more defined look than microblading and is also a good option for oily skin types.
- combination eyebrows Blend the two techniques to give a fluffier, hair-like stroke at the front of the brow and a more defined powder brow effect from the center to the edges.
Cost and maintenance costs
Permanent eyebrow treatments cost between £350 and £1000, depending on the area and practitioner. This includes a thorough consultation, initial treatment, and an additional session six weeks later. If you want your eyebrows to look more defined, you should get a color boost treatment at least every 18 months to two years, but they won’t cost as much as the first treatment. Without this, the effect of the tattoo will eventually fade over time.
