Jill Scott’s beauty identity began with a question posed on her first album. Who is Jill Scott?<\/em> The album, released in 2000, went platinum. Then came the reply. she beautiful and human<\/em>. Since then, her vocal beauty has become synonymous with her lipstick beauty. Deep, full-bodied, and something that makes you notice something. We’ve seen every side of the neo-soul icon as her beauty has evolved over the years. good, largely<\/em>. Scott just released his first full-length project in 11 years. Who this relates to<\/em>opening up a whole new definition of beauty that reflects the last decade of her life.<\/p>\n

But first, let’s take a look back at how she got there. Brown lipstick, purple eyeshadow, and a kinky updo marked her start at VH1’s Save the Music Foundation benefit concert in 2001. She was natural and soulful. And at the 2007 “Real Thing” cocktail reception, she let loose the twist, sported a big Afro and a simple lip gloss instead of dark lipstick. By the 2010s, her makeup was more subdued, but her hair still had something to say. At the 43rd NAACP Image Awards in 2012, for example, she wore a Diana Ross-type bouffant with flipped ends. <\/p>\n

While the late 2010s were all about her explosion, like at 2017’s ESSENCE Festival of Culture, a few years later she found her place in braids and rocking. For example, back at the 2023 festival, Scott wore a locked-up hairstyle with a large silver hair accessory. And when she headlined in 2025, she brought back the dark lipstick she wore during her career debut, paired with a hairstyle with blunt bangs. Now that her new album has been released, we can expect to see a different side of the Grammy Award-winning artist that we haven’t seen yet.<\/p>\n

According to her stylist and former ESSENCE beauty director Pamela Macklin, Scott’s Who this relates to<\/em>Her beauty and style is all about “using her platform to promote Black creatives,” she tells ESSENCE. “We’ve been playing with unstructured structure, shapes, textures, and luxurious fabrics, with comfort as our north star.” In one of her latest beauty looks, she performed with DJ AG in London wearing a black headwrap adorned with a brooch, berry lipstick, and onyx nail polish. <\/p>\n
