Some tried to organize a hunt to catch this monster and prove its existence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Either way, this legend has brought crowds of tourists to Astor to catch a glimpse of this legendary monster.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">However, many biologists at the time believed that this creature was just a manatee that had been &#8220;exaggerated&#8221; by eyewitnesses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><b>[BELOW: Manatee deaths rise in Florida]<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Additionally, the Miami Herald reported that faster currents from the rainy season are carrying the missing hyacinths downstream.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">What about the witnesses who reported seeing it walking?<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Former Florida Game and Freshwater Fish Commissioner John DeQuinn told the Orlando Sentinel it could have been an ordinary cow.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">&#8220;If you&#8217;ve ever been to that country and seen a cow with eelgrass and weeds on its head, you might imagine it&#8217;s a monster,&#8221; he says. \u201cThey stick their heads in the water to get eelgrass.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 dJmKfw hTYOfq full-width\" aria-labelledby=\":Re7sn9a:\" id=\"W2KU2WXLLZGXTMTGIGSBNO4REI\"><figcaption id=\":Re7sn9a:\" class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 jOjMik\"><span class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 ewwUYq\">The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is working with Clearwater Marine Aquarium, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the U.S. Forest Service to plant native freshwater eelgrass in Lake George and Silver Glen Springs to improve habitat for fish and wildlife.<\/span><span class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 hoaNsR\">    (FWC)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Despite these theories, Dillard didn&#8217;t believe it could be a manatee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">&#8220;I&#8217;ve seen herds of 25 manatees. They&#8217;re always in the river.
